RSPB report that many of our rare butterflies are confined to tiny island-like nature reserves. They are developing partnerships with various groups including National Trust and farmers to find ways of preserving habitat for our pollinators. One such example is a longer rotation of cutting of blackthorn hedges. The rare brown hairstreak emerges at he end of July when hedges are starting to be cut. The hairstreak lays eggs in the blackthorn hedges, which are often cut back to early.
